the shooter is jimmy lam, a disgruntled u.p.s. employee. our detectives were there as our detectived searched his home. >> we're also learning more about the victims. one of them is being remembered as a longtime u.p.s. delivery man who made a lot of friends on his route. we have a team of reporters covering all angles on this breaking story. let's begin with nbc bay area cheryl hurd live near the u.p.s. facility. cheryl? >> reporter: some of the roads are open right now but 17th street is still closed down. this investigation will not be rushed. he wants to determine exactly what went on here. it all started to unfold at 9:00 a.m. that's when gunfire erupted. as workers ran to safety on the roof of the u.p.s. building, lewis williams says he was down below in the middle of a chaotic scene when shots rang out at the u.p.s. service distribution center in san francisco.

>> all of a sudden, there was shots fired on the opposite corner and i looked down and someone -- a man fell to the ground. >> reporter: the shooting happened just before 9:00 a.m. drivers were on the third floor of the building, preparing for a meeting. >> he just happened to be right behind me. i was just right in my truck. and i had the pcm ride with the bikes. and i hear, pop, pop, pop, six, seven shots, probably. >> forces are identifying the shooter as jimmy lam, workers telling nbc bay area that lam opened fire on his coworkers. we have also learned he had two weapons, including a mac-10 style machine pistol and a backpack full of ammunition and three magazines. once the shooting stopped, lam went back to his truck and shot himself in front of police. >> aid was rendered to folks. they were dragged to safety. so we're going to have to reconstruct that entire scene, and that's why crime scene investigation is on scene right now. and that's why it's crucial to get the statements, so we can reconstruct what happened moment

by moment. >> one of the drivers made it very clear, and one of the drivers, he said, well, we expected this sooner or later. >> reporter: now, i did ask williams to clarify his statement. he says drivers he talked to are under a lot of stress. there are some 350 people who work here. reporting live in san francisco, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, cheryl. well, reports of the shooting came into 911 operates, this is how it sounded to police officers in the field. >> -- several have been shot. shooter is goa. this is in the u.p.s. building. >> code 33 on a-4. shooter by the building, the u.p.s. building at 17th and utah. >> please respond to the u.p.s. building, 17th and utah. possible active shooter. the suspect is an employee, asian male. >> you're looking live at the

suspected gunman's home on fourth avenue near gary in san francisco's richmond district. our cameras caught police going in and out all afternoon, taking items with them. nbc bay area investigative reporter jackson van der beckett has learned exclusive details about the gunman. >> reporter: we were the first ones to arrive as police swarmed this duplex. this is the home of 38-year-old jimmy lam, the u.p.s. driver that police say shot five people at his job site before killing himself in front of police today. sources tell me that lam has a history of mental issues and may have been upset with his boss. we've also learned he's had a previous criminal history involving dui charges. neighbors tell us that they've seen him around in his uniform, but that he largely kept to himself, usually smoking out a duplex window or talking on his cell phone. they say hearing he may have killed coworkers is stunning. >> i'm just in shock.

because i just heard about it. i heard about it from one of the neighbors >> reporter: police have spent much of the day searching his apartment for an explanation, after finding at least three gun magazines at the scene of the shooting. we saw them remove paper bags of evidence and a large computer tower. >> jackson van der beckett joining us now. and jackson, you have new information on the weapons used in this attack. >> reporter: yes, we have a machine pistol, a mac-10, capable of rapid fire, as well as a second weapon. and then there's the backpack full of dozens of rounds of magazine ammunition. and police came here looking for more evidence. it appears they found most of the weapons at the scene. >> all right. jackson, thanks very much. we're also learning more tonight about one of the delivery drivers killed in this shooting. a man known in the community as big mike. 46-year-old mike lefiti leaves behind a family and many friends he met along his route. nbc bay area's scott budman is live in san francisco with our

continuing coverage. you're along his delivery route in the diamond heights neighborhood. and scott, neighbors there knew him well. >> reporter: yeah, they really did, janelle. mike lefiti had an unusual, rather touching relationship with many people here in the diamond heights neighborhood. this is a memorial people have been putting together this afternoon to remember big mike. while visiting a memorial to honor mike lefiti's life, people at the diamond heights shopping center got emotional. >> mike was an extraordinary person. >> he loved everybody. he always had a smile. he's just so big, you just want to hug him. >> reporter: everyone called him big mike. they describe him as a family man, who made friends everywhere he delivered. >> mike was bigger than life. he was like 300 pounds of human being, but he was like 800 pounds of joy and laughter. >> he was an amazing person. he just had the hugest heart.

>> reporter: erica miller lives along mike's delivery route. they say everyone here is shocked. they feel like they lost a good friend. >> he has the biggest heart in the whole world. even though he was a huge guy, he did look intimidating to people who didn't know him. but he was just a huge teddy bear. >> reporter: a friend who always made sure to take care of others. >> several months ago, i passed his truck looking for a present for my grandson so i could take it and leave right away and give it to him. >> reporter: that's the kind of guy he was. several people tell us mike was planning to take his kids to the warriors parade tomorrow. there is also talk of a go fund me to help his family. reporting live in san francisco, scott budman, nbc bay area news. >> scott, thanks very much. so sad there. when san francisco mayor ed lee went to the scene and spoke out, he said he did so for those who lost their lives in the rampage. >> these tragedies are so terrible, and they, of course,

bring us together. and from u.p.s., i personally felt -- i know my driver. i know him personally. he delivers every day. they're happy, hard-working people and we know them. >> after the news conference, the mayor did not leave alone. he brought with him grief counselors from the health department to meet with witnesses traumatized by what they saw. on twitter, lieutenant governor gavin newsom wrote to his hometown, senseless, tragic, too frequent, thinking of those affected by today's san francisco shooting. the people offer city stand with you always. from representative nancy pelosi, incredibly difficult day. my thoughts are with the injured and the families of those lost in today's shooting at u.p.s. in sf's potrero hill. >> hundreds of employees work at this u.p.s. building. sky ranger overhead today as police escorted many to safety. all of this happening as family members of many of the workers waited nearby on answers on what

happened. nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live with that part of the story. christie? >> reporter: janelle, some of the family members told us they were told that some of these u.p.s. workers were waiting in a building nearby after the shooting. so they waited, too, hoping to be reunited. >> yeah, i'm very relieved that she's okay. >> reporter: maria hernandez stood by waiting for her daughter, just blocks away from the deadly shooting at the u.p.s. facility in san francisco. >> my daughter works at u.p.s., and someone came in, i guess, and she didn't see the person. she just heard the shots and she knew that there was people down. and when i talked to her -- i didn't talk to her for a very long time, okay? a minute, at the most. but she's okay. >> scary. very scary. >> reporter: maria al metto's 21-year-old son worked as a loader at u.p.s. she showed us as soon as she heard about the shooting. >> immediately, i left. >> did you try to call him?

>> i did, call, text, but nothing. >> reporter: she said workers there let her know her son was not hurt, but some had a far longer and more anxious wait for information, as they began to hear descriptions of the shooting. >> it was pop, pop, pop, pop, like six or seven shots, and he fired at least five to six more outside. >> reporter: an hour and a half after the shooting began, police finally had the situation contained. a family assistant center opened nearby. closer to the scene, a group of employees left quietly. >> i am most concerned about my employees, to make sure that we have as many counselors that are needed on site for all of their support. >> reporter: now, one mom who spoke with us earlier gave her son a big hug when she saw him. we asked how she was feeling then, and she just gave us a one-word answer. and that was, happy. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, thank you very much. you might remember this.

u.p.s., just a few years ago, dealt with another workplace shooting, back in 2014, in birmingham, alabama. workers shot and killed two of his supervisors before taking his own life. back in san francisco, the shooting evoked some memories of the 101 california shooting, which is the worst mass shooting in san francisco's history. that happened in july of 1993. the gunman stored a law firm's offices, killing eight people, wounding six others. his motive remains unclear to this day. the shooting prompted a national debate on gun control and led to several new laws. our coverage not over. we're going to get live updates throughout this newscast. you can also get the latest on nbcbayarea.com. we also have an update on our breaking news we first brought to you at 5:00. the lockdown at travis air force base has been lifted. we've just learned in the last 45 minutes, the active shooter situation at that base in fairfield was a false alarm. travis air force base emergency personnel responded to reports of gunshots, but after searching

we have breaking news in contra costra county, where just a few hours ago, the district attorney announced he is resigning after pleading no contest to felony perjury. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez broke the news of the charges on twitter. she joins us live in martinez with the latest details. jodi? >> reporter: janelle, i'll tell you, it has been a day full of drama here in the kropcontra co county courthouse, as the district attorney faced the judge as a criminal defendant. now, state prosecutors call the charges he faced serious and sophisticated. well, his attorneys say his actions were nothing more than a tragic mistake. mr. peterson, what do you say

about the charges? district attorney mark peterson walked into the contra costra county courthouse through the public interest, just like any other criminal defendant, as he appeared in court on felony charges. >> not only is he prosecuting, he's a lawyer for 30 years. so he knew better. >> reporter: the state attorney general filed 12 counts of felony perjury and one count of felony grand theft against the county's top cop this morning. claiming he illegally took $66,000 from his campaign fund and lied about it on campaign disclosure documents. >> and mark patterson apparently thinks he is above the law. what we're saying is, equality for all. >> reporter: while members of the public gathered outside, inside a packed courtroom, peterson made a deal. he pled no contest to one count of felony perjury and resigned from office. in exchange, the state agreed to dismiss the other charges. >> i'm sure that nobody is more remorseful and sorry for his conduct than mark peterson.

>> mark peterson is shamed. he's probably going to lose his law license. he paid a large fine over $40,000. he paid all the money back. he's suffered enough. >> reporter: peterson will have to serve three years probation and community service. he left the courthouse without saying a word. >> he was very proud of his six years of service in a district attorney's office. >> reporter: again, mark peterson has resigned from his office as district attorney. he will still have to be booked on that felony perjury charge, and the judge ordered that to happen by the end of the week. meantime, this county is without a district attorney. the chief assistant d.a. says he will take over the duties until the board of supervisors can appoint a new d.a. reporting live in contra costra county, i'm jodie hernandez, nbc bay area news. thank you, jodi. now to new details in a south bay killing. the naked woman who allegedly killed an elderly cupertino

woman has confessed to the crime. nbc bay area's marianne favro is live at the santa clara courthouse in palo alto with the latest on the investigation into this truly bizarre case. marianne? >> reporter: suzanne hernandez walked into the courtroom here in palo alto this afternoon, wearing handcuffs and shackled. and according to this report by investigators, they say that she confessed to killing an elderly woman using a hammer. deputies say they took 39-year-old susan hernandez to santa clara valley medical center, friday, for a psychiatric evaluation, after she was found running naked down a busy street in cupertino. later, investigators linked her to the murder of 74-year-old mary wilson, who was found dead in her cupertino home. the attack happened in the victim's living room. authorities say it appears hernandez beat the victim with a hammer during an apparent manic episode. >> it looks like the suspect entered through the back door of

the residence. it appears that the victim was awake. they were unrelated to each other, so it doesn't look like they knew each other in any way. >> reporter: according to this report by a sheriff's deputy, hernandez admitted killing wilson using a hammer. the prosecutor says there are clearly mental health issues with this suspect and she expects it's possible hernandez could plead guilty by reason of insanity. hernandez lives in los gatos. she did not enter a plea this afternoon. reporting live in palo alto, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> okay, marianne. thanks for the update. a big cleanup project is underway in the san francisco bay, just under the bay bridge. you may remember a barge capsized a few months ago, it happened just south of the bridge and settled just above the transbay two. now the coast guard is cleaning up the mess. today they're removing fuel from the barge to keep it from leaking into the water, but the barge itself will not be completely removed for several more weeks. jeff ranieri here now. and you've got a lot of other

days of -- it's a heat wave that's coming our way. >> it definitely is going to be. temperatures pushing into the 100s as we head throughout the next seven to ten-day forecast. maybe even beyond that. >> announcer: now nbc bay area's microclimate weather, certified most accurate in the bay area. >> and the one spot, though, you will be able to get some relief, as temperatures start to heat up, is san francisco. a beautiful day here today. not much in the way of fog. you can see all the blue sky, as our camera in downtown is pointed right off towards the north bay. as we take you right now to our current temperature, we have 65 degrees. temperatures dropping into the 50s as we head throughout 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00. and we'll take you to the interior valleys. much different here in concord today. a high of 90 degrees, right now dropping to 86. low humidity at 27%. keep the fire danger on the crea increase. eventually dropping to 60s as you head throughout 11:00 p.m. tomorrow morning's forecast does have warmer temperatures coming our way. we think we'll get

the warriors, after winning a long awaited n-b-a remember this? two years ago fans lined the streets of oakland to cheer on the warriors after winning a long-awaited nba championship. >> that was long awaited. well, tomorrow's victory parade fast approaching and today some of the team's top stars showed up for an official interview. nbc's robert honda was there, and tells us not even questions about whether to accept a warehouse invitation could break the positive vibes. >> reporter: well, today was the first official media availability before the championship victory. and as you can imagine, everyone was in a pretty good mood to talk about just about anything. steph curry showed up saying he was still decompressing over the victory over the cleveland cavaliers and says he is still reluctant to visit the white house because of some of president trump's policies. >> we don't want that to taint what we've accomplished that year, so we'll handle that accordingly and responsibly. and like i said, do the right

agr right now at 6:30, a deadly shooting rampage at a u.p.s. facility in san francisco. a disgruntled employee opens fire killing three, wounding two before turning the gun on himself. this happened right near 101. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is live at the scene with an update on our top story. cheryl? >> reporter: workers here are still trying to wrap their minds around what happened here. some people lost loved ones. some people lost friends. 17th street is still blocked off at this hour. 9 1/2 hours after gunfire erupted. it was just before 9:00 a.m. u.p.s. workers at the sorting and distribution center in san francisco were lining up for a

me meeting when shots rang out. >> i just hear, bam, bam, bam, six shots. >> reporter: u.p.s. workers martin calderon was an eyewitness to the shooting. >> san bruno and 17, i hear at least five more shots. >> reporter: did you see the gunman? >> no. >> do you know the gunman? >> i see him at work, but i don't know him. >> reporter: sources are identifying the shooter as jimmy lam. workers telling nbc bay area y that lam opened fire on his coworkers on the third floor. he then, according to sources, went back into his truck and shot himself in front of police. sky ranger spotted the s.w.a.t. team on the roof, along with workers, waiting to be rescued. >> aid was rendered to folks. they were dragged to safety. so we'll have to reconstruct that entire scene and that's why crime scene investigations on scene right now. >> never want to feel that way, like someone's going to kill you. and you're not going to see your kids. that's the worst part. >> that's what you were thinking about? >> oh, yeah.

>> this investigation will be slow and meticulous, according to the assistant police chief here in san francisco, 350 people work at this facility. reporting live in san francisco, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, cheryl. u.p.s. released a statement following today's deadly shooting. it read in part, quote, the company is saddened and deeply concerned about affected employees, family members, and the community we share. our thoughts and prayers are with all those touched by this incident. families anxiously awaited nearby to make sure their loved ones were safe. nbc bay area's christie smith and, christie, some had to wait and wait to get an answer. >> reporter: that's right. you know, terry, many families told us they got a phone call or text, or some sort of message letting them know pretty quickly that their loved ones were safe. for others, there was a long, silent wait. >> scary. very scary.

all, they love our country. >> reporter: new details are emerging about the allege shooter, james t. hodgkinson, who was killed when police returned fire. he volunteered with bernie sanders' presidential campaign. >> i am sickened by this despicable act. >> reporter: for some lawmakers, it's a chilling reality in a bitter political climate. >> i have never, ever feared for my security. now i fear for my security. after seeing the carnage there today. >> both sides now finding common ground in the wake of an attack. and that shooting took place at a practice for a charity baseball game. it's something that's been going on for more than a hundred years, every year bringing democrats and republicans together in a favorite tradition. we have learned that game will go on tomorrow night as planned, now giving both sides a new reason to unite. on capitol hill, blayne alexander, nbc bay area news.

>> blayne, thank you. we are learning that 12 people have died in a fire in london. 79 others were hurt. a high-rise building went up in flames. we showed you live pictures of this inferno. the building completely engulfed. london police say the death toll could rise and at this point they're not saying how many people are unaccounted for. the neighbors are gathering supplies for people who lost everything. you can see the stockpiles of supplies they have already collected. nearby churches and mosques are set up as gathering spots for those donations. new details on a turning point in the investigation by special counsel, robert mueller. today "the washington post" reports, he's now eyeing donald trump and whether the president tried to obstruct justice. initially, mueller was named to examine russia's role in the 2016 election and potential collusion with the trump campaign, but "the post" quotes senior intelligence officials who say the president's firing of fbi director james comey has widened the investigation to include obstruction. a spokesman for the president's attorney says, quote, the fbi

leak is outrageous and illegal, but nowhere does "the post" indicate its source was within the fbi. new at 6:00, a fight is brewing over smart street lights that are about to be installed in san jose. now, the tech company that created the device promises they can boost wi-fi in the case of emergency, but critics fear that bright tech could create privacy issues. nbc bay area's michelle roberts reports from san jose if the lights are expected to be installed this summer. >> here's our smart lighting control unit. >> reporter: this small box will be installed on about 1,000 light poles throw san jose. the pilot program is essentially a trade. the city was looking to cover the multi-million dollar cost of upgrades thousands of streetlights to l.e.d.s and the creators of this smart l.e.d. controller box were looking for real space to test their new technology. >> a new wireless hot spot for the entire city.

>> reporter: rod pulaski is the ceo of any com. they approved a one-year partnership to see if many of the features on the l.e.d. controllers will work. >> detecting car crashes or gunshots or even being an earthquake sensor. >> reporter: the controller also has face recognition cameras and aid recording capabilities, but the city hasn't decided if those features will be enabled. >> we'll have the capability of monitoring the data, but what the city is allowed to do with the data is something i'm concerned about. >> reporter: city councilman johnny cam has voted against the pilot program. he believes the community should be able to decide what, if any, surveillance tools should be implemented. and while some welcome the high-tech lights -- >> if people know they're being watched, they don't do stupid things. >> reporter: others fear the technology will give city officials too much power. that lab slippery slope. >> the city will have to right to any of the data that's collected by these smart lights. and so far, city officials

>> nbc bay area responds to car complaints almost every day of the week. >> tonight, consumer investigator chris chmura opened two cases where the buyers with so fed up, they wanted the car companies to simply buy back their new cars. >> their cases ended differently. we want to show you high and we want you to hear from an expert who says, you should never just settle when a brand-new car has a persistent problem. >> we love it. and it drives great. >> reporter: lisa sully's 2016 kia sedona is being towed to her albany home. the engine runs, but she and her partner, claudine, are afraid to drive it. >> i panicked. >> they say the steering wheel has twice locked up on the road during left turns. >> it won't turn back to the right. it's totally stuck. it gets stuck in the position, in the turning left position. >> reporter: it's actually my first time buying a new car.

he says when he accelerates, the turbo charger in his new 2016 chevy malibu rattles. >> it's kind of like a grinding. >> reporter: a nuisance he said he heard at the start. >> i said, maybe it will go away. maybe it's just the engine breaking in. i was reading, trying to find stuff on the web about it. >> reporter: brian found that gm issued this service bulletin about the rattle, but no solution. so he decided it was time toll wash his hands of the malibu. >> i reached o out to you guys, to nbc investigates. both ryan and lisa asked us for help in getting the manufacturer to buy back their vehicle. only one was successful. which one? the kia with the stuck steering wheel or the chevy with the rattle. the rattle. chevy offered ryan a $22,000 buyback deal that he took. >> yeah, i appreciate your guys, you know nbc helping me out with this. >> reporter: gm said, we decided a buyback offer was the best course of action for everyone, even though we don't believe there was a defect in the engine that affected its performance, safety, or durability.

ryan is now driving a new chevy impala. lisa, on the other hand, still owns her sedona, which she has parked, perhaps permanently. >> i'm scared to drive this car. i won't drive this car. because knowing that it's not safe, if i hurt somebody, it would be my fault. >> reporter: we searched the national highway traffic safety administration database and found other kia owners reporting similar issues with steering bhe wheels that locked. kia acknowledged the reports but says it cannot duplicate lisa's steering problem. a spokesman says, despite the proactive efforts, they can't rectify the problem. >> lisa and claudine say they can't ethically sell the van to another family, so they're stuck making payments on a van that will sit. >> it's going to be here. it's not going to be driven. >> reporter: their next step might be hairhiring an attorney like scott whose sole practice

is holding car companies accountable. >> we don't advertise and the phone never stops ringing. >> they would much rather you go away. trade it in, drive it off a cliff, give it to somebody else, but they don't want to buy it back. manufacturers are supposed to make a buyback offer when you repeatedly bring in a car for service. >> they have to buy it back without even being asked. >> reporter: a 1995 california case concluded that car companies have a duty to provide you a refund or replacement when repeated repairs don't work. even if you don't ask for it. >> that's the law in california. >> how often does that happen? >> never. >> reporter: so he says consumers must fight. here are his keys to demands a car buyback. communicate everything in writing. require that the shop document exactly what you say on its work orders, so no one downplays your problem. be persistent. state law requires you to give the carmaker multiple attempts to fix what's wrong.

weather here from the zone, from antioch into concord, down to walnut creek, also danville in low 90s. by the bay, slightly cooler. 81 in hayward. if you're heading out for the warriors championship parade, you're getting there early in the morning. 60s and clear skies. by the afternoon, not too hot. sunny and 75. so bring the hat and also the sunglasses. it's going to be a great time. back here across the peninsula, we have 81 in belmont. and up towards daly city, a much cooler 68. that's going to be the trend the next several days as temperatures heat up inland, you can still go to the coast to get some relief. tomorrow, 60s here from the evenings side into the outer sunnetsu suns sunset. in the north bay, anywhere from 84 in mill valley to 63 at point reyes and back to napa, 90 degrees. now, things, as we've been mentioning, have been getting even warmer in the forecast. it's all due to high pressure building in. it's not just our typical area

of high pressure that's moving the storm track off to the north. we're going to see it move in just the right spot, on top of california, and it's going to help to drag in some very hot air from the desert, right throughout northern california, right on down to the l.a. basin. no doubt, warmest weather of the year and 100s will be back on track. as you've probably seen on that psychologicali i scrolling seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. we have an excessive heat watch in effect from friday through sunday. when you start to feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated on some sort of level. wear light-colored clothing. remember the hat and also remember those pets, as well. they need some extra water. still on the extended is forecast, san francisco stays pretty well here, with mid-70s. warmest weather this weekend. nothing in terms of 80s or 90 through the next seven days, but for the inland valleys, dangerous levels of heat really spike up by saturday. 97 degrees, we've warmed it up even a few more degrees into
